Welcome to The Community Market by Gleaners
Our food bank program, The Community Market, operates on a “client choice” model. Every visitor receives a certain number of points each month uses those points to shop through our food bank, selecting only the foods they want. We believe this model provides the best experience for our visitors.
We do place some limitations on items that are in high demand to ensure equitable access to the food. Otherwise, visitors may opt to use their points however they choose.
Appointments are required because they allows us to manage the flow of our visitors, providing a better experience for everyone involved.
Gleaners Foodbank also operates Michaelangelo’s Café where individuals can receive a hot or cold beverage and something to eat. The café is open to the public for take-out or eat-in service during client operating hours.
No-Cost Food Access
- All food and services provided by Gleaners Foodbank are completely free of charge to clients.
- Clients are not required to pay, provide donations, or exchange goods or services in order to access food support.
- Volunteers, staff, and community partners must ensure that clients are aware that there is no cost for food hampers, take-out meals, or other programs.
- Any suggestion of payment, tipping, or preferential access in exchange for money or goods is strictly prohibited.

Same-day appointments are sometimes available but our services are in high demand currently and your appointment may be booked for a later date.
We require the following to register your household:
- A photo identification or driver’s license of every adult member in the household
Lack of photo ID or lack of a fixed address will not be a barrier to you receiving food. We can also help refer you to services in our community to get a new ID.
During the intake process, we will ask you questions about your household. We collect statistical information to inform research and advocate for food security.
- Basic contact information: name, birth date, address, phone number
- Marital status, educational background, employment, ethnicity, disabilities, health restrictions, housing status and type, gender
These demographics are collected for statistical purposes only. We will also ask for your consent to store your information in our client database. We respect your privacy and as a client, you can decline to answer any sensitive information – you will still receive service.
The information we collect is shared with Food Banks Canada to help fight food insecurity in our community, our region, our province, and nationally. We also use statistical information to apply for grants to fund improvements to our services.

What Food Will I Get?
- Non-Perishable Food Items
A variety of canned and packaged foods including soups, pasta, cereal, etc. - Fresh Food Items
Eggs, bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy items, etc. - Frozen Food Items
Frozen vegetables, sauces, etc. - Personal Hygiene Items
Shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.
