Volunteering at Gleaners is fun and rewarding!

On your own or in a group, we'll find you a role that works for you.

What types of activities are available?

We have multiple positions within our organization for volunteer opportunities that are including but not limited to: front counter, side counter, reception, intake, café volunteer, hamper area, break down, sorter, warehouse assistance etc. If you have a certain skills that you believe would be beneficial to the organization but do not see a volunteer opportunity that would suit you, please let us know and we can try and accommodate something!

Can I choose a specific day and time to volunteer?

Absolutely you can! We are open Monday to Friday from 9am until 12pm (NOON) and again on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Based off of your schedule and availability, you tell us when you are available and would like to volunteer.

Do I need computer skills?

A few volunteer opportunities require the use of a computer. We try to match the volunteers based on their skills and interests. For the positions that use technology, training is given.

If I cannot stand for long periods, can I still volunteer?

We have various positions for every person and every skill level. Once you meet with our Volunteer Coordinator, you will determine which position you like the most and which position will suit you best. We have positions that require no lifting and mostly immobile. We try and match your interests and needs as best as we can.

Do I need a police check?

Due to the nature of our organization, our volunteers work with vulnerable populations including seniors and children, therefore, before any volunteering can begin, we ask for a police check with a vulnerable sector check as well.

Do you provide training?

We do provide training for each position. Our volunteer coordinator will help get you started and you will be paired up with another volunteer that is familiar within that position. For intake, there is a lengthy training period as a volunteer in this position works with our client intake system.

Do I have to commit for a long time? What is the time commitment?

Whether you want to volunteer once a week or once a month, we always have space for you to join our team. Most volunteers choose one day a week that works for their schedule. We are open for client services Monday to Friday from 9am until 12pm (NOON). Volunteers normally stay for the full three (3) hour shift. We are always happy to have volunteers choose more than one day, however, this all depends on your time schedule. There is no length of time to commit, you can volunteer for one month or one week.

Do you accept high school students? What opportunities do you have if I am in high school?

We absolutely accept high school students! Whether that is just for regular volunteering or helping students with their community service hours, we are always looking for student volunteers. We are open on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 in which students can volunteer for. As well, we are always looking for volunteers to help us during our special events. We have a range of opportunities for students both in public and behind the scenes.
