Supporting the Quinte Regional Food Share Shelter
Gleaners Food Bank was selected to set up a regional warehouse to efficiently bring food to this region’s food banks. With funds from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Harold Ballard Foundation, Gleaners purchased and installed an industrial fridge and freezer, industrial shelving and other equipment to operate the warehouse. The purchase of these items enabled the Tri-County Warehouse to safely and efficiently unload donations for the region.
The purpose of the Tri-County Warehouse is to provide safe and efficient shipping, receiving and food storage for all donations for the region. The warehouse weighs all donations in and out of the warehouse and maintains an accurate inventory system.
The Tri-County Warehouse receives local and corporate donations from across Canada through Food Banks Canada, the National Food Share System and Feed Ontario’s Snap Food Program. These donations are distributed to the region’s food banks based on annual Hunger Counts. The region’s food banks are members of the Quinte Regional Food Share Shelter (QRFSS) and they visit the warehouse monthly for supplies that are crucial to operating their food bank in their community.
These supplies include perishable and non-perishable food. Surplus food donations are directed to meal programs and non-profit agencies.
The Tri-County Warehouse has a full time Warehouse Manager and gives a variety of special needs and alternative school placements an opportunity to learn new skills and give back to their community.
